How to Calculate Soil Temperature

To get an approximate soil temperature, you don't need to waste money on an expensive soil thermometer, or really any thermometer to measure soil temperature. You just need to average the past 3 days temperatures.

For each day, add the highest temperature and lowest temperature together. Divide that number by 2. Once you have the average of each of the three days, add those three averages together. Divide that number by 3 and that is the approximate soil temperature.

Example

Temperatures

Friday's Low: 54
Friday's High: 84

Saturday's Low: 48
Saturday's High: 66

Sunday's Low: 48
Sunday's High: 72

Step 1: Calculate daily averages

Friday
54 + 84 = 138
138 / 2 = 69
Average is 69℉

Saturday
48 + 66 = 114
114 / 2 = 57
Average is 57℉

Sunday
48 + 72 = 120
120 / 2 = 60
Average is 60℉

Step 2: approximate soil temperature

69℉ + 57℉ + 60℉ = 186
186 / 3 = 62℉

Approximate Soil Temperature is 62℉
